Movie Night

A couple of years ago I wrote a post about good books for OT students to read, so I decided it was time to compile a short list of movies that any healthcare students and practitioners can enjoy. The list is compiled of a few movies that have been personally recommended to me and I know there are so many others. Feel free to add any movies you’ve enjoyed!

The ones I have watched are in pink and I’ve noted the ones available on Netflix or Hulu.   Continue reading “Movie Night”

Happy OT Month!

ot2bmonth2b1

Hey everyone, I’m just getting back and recovering from the AOTA Conference and Centennial Celebration! It was such an amazing and inspiring experience! I am so fortunate that I attended my first conference and it was also the Centennial Celebration for this amazing profession. I met so many wonderful people, attended educational sessions, volunteered as a room monitor, and was fortunate to be exposed to companies and innovating products. It was also the perfect way to welcome OT Month. Continue reading “Happy OT Month!”

The “R” Word

thatssonotgay_retarded_8

You may use this word, or know someone that uses this word, whenever something isn’t to your liking. This word is used as a synonym for words like dumb, childish, silly, and trivial. I have been around many people who use the word without thinking of the negative connotations of the word. Continue reading “The “R” Word”

World Occupational Therapy Day

October is my one of favorite months of the year. There are all the fall activities, the fall weather, all the Halloween classics on TV, and, best of all, World Occupational Therapy Day on October 27th!

Mental Health Quilt

tumblr_of7pzl3zlp1va1ss4o1_r1_500

Before I started OT school, I was not aware that occupational therapy’s roots were in mental health. The profession began in early 20th century during the mental hygiene movement after focus was turned to improving the conditions of mental health institutions. Over the years we, as a profession, have lost touch with our roots. According to AOTA, only 2.9% of the OTs and COTAs work in mental health, which is a huge difference compared to 26.2% in hospitals, 21.6% in schools, and 19.9% in nursing facilities. There has always been some sort of stigma when it comes to mental illness, so that may be a cause for the low number working in that setting.

Airbag…Helmets?!

Hey guys! So I saw this video on Facebook and it was such a coincidence that I had just finished reading about traumatic brain injuries (TBI) for one of my classes. I started researching more about the product and was excited to see all the research and tests behind the product. You can read more about it here. I see so many people riding without helmets these days and it makes me so anxious. This airbag will definitely be a game-changer, especially for people with head and brain injuries. Successful Rehab Takes Teamwork

I saw this video a few years ago and it moved me. It ignited another passion for me to become the type of therapist the young woman had on her rehabilitation team. Gina set a goal she wanted to accomplish and her therapists developed a plan of treatment to reach that goal. She was able to return teaching what she enjoyed doing: tumbling. It’s also moving to watch her walk down the aisle with her dad at her side. Her father also expressed sincere gratitude for how she was treated, all the hard work, the positivity that surrounded his daughter, and for never letting her lose hope. Watching this video again reminded me of why I chose to pursue OT.  Continue reading “Successful Rehab Takes Teamwork”

Diversity in the Media

I ran across this Target ad earlier this week on my Flipp app. It first caught my eye because I am currently looking for a backpack for school, but then I noticed the little girl. Excitement took over because I have always felt that people with disabilities don’t get positive representation in the media. This isn’t the first time Target has included a model with disabilities in their advertisements. Last Halloween, they included a little girl with arm crutches and braces dressed as Elsa: target_disability Continue reading “Diversity in the Media”

OT on Ellen!

This aired earlier this year and I has so happy to see this on Ellen! I wish she had explained more about OT, but I honestly can’t blame her. She didn’t know she was going to be sitting in front of Ellen until 10 minutes before she had to get on stage, and it’s apparent she was extremely nervous. One thing is for sure, you can see how passionate she is about the field and helping kids succeed in school!
